Factory Cat Ladders · Steel Grade by Grade

Steel Cat Ladder, Grade by Grade

Spec a steel cat ladder and you are buying engineered strength plus a corrosion finish matched to your environment. Here is how the Dengtai factory grades compare — from the Q235B default to stainless, aluminium and GRP. Retrofit access after handover always costs more than specifying it correctly at tender stage.

Q235B Hot-Dip Galvanised

The factory default steel cat ladder. Fabricated from Q235B mild steel, then fully immersed in molten zinc for a uniform 85–100 µm coating to ISO 1461. 1.5 kN rung load; decades of service life depending on exposure class (see ISO 14713 guidance).

Best cost-per-decade outdoors

Stainless SS304 / SS316

mill-certified and acid-pickled austenitic steel for coastal, chemical, marine and food plants. Specify SS316 for chloride exposure. A material premium — see the pricing guide.

Coastal & chemical service

Aluminium

Alloy 6061-T6, anodised option. Around a third lighter than a steel cat ladder — first choice for rooftop retrofits and weight-limited structures. Solid coastal performance, no galvanic risk against anodised surfaces.

Lightweight retrofit

GRP / FRP

Non-conductive fibreglass for electrical substations, switch rooms and aggressive process plants. No hot work on site, UV-stable resins, near-zero maintenance — with lower load capacity than a steel cat ladder.

Electrical & corrosive plants

How the steel is selected

Match the steel cat ladder grade to the exposure class

  • Indoor & general outdoor

Q235B with HDG 85–100 µm — the value default for dry plants, warehouse racking and most roof access.

  • Coastal & chemical plants

Step up to SS304 or SS316 stainless for chlorides, acids and washdown environments where coatings get damaged.

  • Live electrical areas

GRP keeps the run non-conductive; aluminium suits weight-limited roofs — both custom-built to the same geometry.

Why a Mild Steel Cat Ladder

Why a Mild Steel Cat Ladder

The term steel cat ladder almost always means mild steel (MS) — low-carbon structural steel shaped, welded and protected to order. Q235B is our standard grade: it welds cleanly, takes a uniform hot-dip zinc coating, and holds the 1.5 kN per-rung load without over-engineering the section. Choose a mild steel cat ladder when you want steel strength at the lowest per-metre cost.

  1. Cut & punch

Q235B sheet is cut, punched and bent; rung centres are jig-set at 225–230 mm before welding.

  2. Weld & trial-assemble

Stile-and-rung sub-assemblies are welded, then trial-erected to catch distortion before finishing.

  3. Galvanise or coat

Hot-dip 85–100 µm (ISO 1461) or powder coat, with SS304 bolts supplied as standard.

  4. QC & load check

Rung load proven to 1.5 kN; coating thickness logged per order.

Steel Cat Ladder FAQ

What is a steel cat ladder made of?
Steel cat ladders are fabricated from Q235B mild steel structural grade and hot-dip galvanised to 85–100 µm per ISO 1461 as standard. The same ladder can be supplied in SS304 or SS316 stainless where coastal or chemical exposure demands it — stiles, rungs and cage hoops are all grade-matched.
What is the difference between a steel cat ladder and a galvanised cat ladder?
A steel cat ladder is the base product — mild steel stiles and rungs. Galvanising is the corrosion finish applied after fabrication: the finished ladder is immersed in a molten zinc bath for a uniform 85–100 µm coating inside and out. We ship steel cat ladders hot-dip galvanised as standard, and can finish in powder coat or stainless on request.
Can I get a steel cat ladder with a safety cage?
Yes — cage hoops, vertical bars and all fixings are fabricated in the same Q235B steel and hot-dip galvanised to match, with SS304 bolts supplied as standard. Caged runs follow OSHA 1910.28 and EN ISO 14122-4 cage dimensions.
Do you provide compliance documents with steel cat ladders?
Every order ships with a Declaration of Conformity, an MTC 3.1 material certificate and engineer-signed structural calculation sheets — all at no extra cost.
How long does a steel cat ladder take to manufacture and ship?
You get a quote in 24 hours, then production runs 15–25 working days from the approved drawing. Finished ladders ship EXW, FOB or CIF — you pick the incoterm that suits your freight forwarder, and the same quote states packing as knocked-down sections or fully assembled sets.
Is there a minimum order quantity for steel cat ladders?
No — trial orders start from 1 unit, so you can prove the grade and finish on site before committing to a full programme. Container mixes are quoted per load plan, letting steel, stainless, aluminium and GRP ladders travel together when the packing plan allows.
What are your payment terms?
Standard terms are T/T with a 30% deposit and 70% against the B/L copy. Any alternative payment structure is confirmed in writing on the proforma invoice before production starts, so the terms you approve are the terms that govern the order.
Is Q235B mild steel strong enough for tall caged runs?
Yes. Every rung is engineered for a 1.5 kN point load per EN ISO 14122-4, and single runs are fabricated up to 25 m — our factory maximum. Taller climbs are engineered with rest platforms rather than one continuous ladder pushed past that limit.
Can a steel cat ladder come with stainless fixings?
Yes — SS304 bolts are supplied as standard on Q235B hot-dip galvanised ladders, protecting the fasteners where site handling damages coatings. For full corrosion duty, complete SS304 or SS316 ladders are quoted to drawing with stiles, rungs and cage hoops all grade-matched.
