Galvanised Cat Ladder Materials Compared

Why Choose a Galvanised Cat Ladder

When you spec a galvanised cat ladder you are buying decades of corrosion resistance at a fraction of stainless cost. Here is how our hot-dip galvanising compares with the rest of the factory range. Specifying the wrong material for the atmosphere shows up as coating failure within the first inspection cycle.

Hot-Dip Galvanised Q235B

The factory default. Fabricated first, then fully immersed in molten zinc — a uniform 85–100 µm coating per ISO 1461 with no cut edges left exposed. Decades of service life depending on exposure class (see ISO 14713 guidance).

Best cost-per-decade outdoors

Stainless SS304 / SS316

mill-certified and acid-pickled. For coastal, marine, chemical and food environments where coating damage is unacceptable. Highest corrosion resistance of the range; specify SS316 for chlorides. A material premium — see the pricing guide.

Coastal & chemical service

Aluminium

Alloy 6061-T6, anodised option. Around a third lighter than steel — first choice for rooftop retrofits and weight-limited structures. Solid coastal performance, no galvanic risk against anodised surfaces.

Lightweight retrofit

GRP / FRP

Non-conductive fibreglass for electrical substations, switch rooms and aggressive process plants. No hot work on site, UV-stable resins, near-zero maintenance — with lower load capacity than steel.

Electrical & corrosive plants

How the galvanising is done

Four controlled steps from plate to 85–100 µm coating

  1. Fabricate

Q235B is cut, punched, welded and trial-assembled; holes and cut edges are prepped before dipping.

  2. Clean & flux

Degreasing, acid pickling and fluxing remove mill scale so the zinc wets the full surface.

  3. Hot-dip bath

Components are immersed in a 450°C molten zinc bath — internal and external surfaces coat uniformly.

  4. Verify

Coating thickness is checked with a magnetic gauge to ISO 1461 (85–100 µm) and logged per order.

Galvanised Cat Ladder FAQ

How long does a hot dip galvanised cat ladder last?
Our hot-dip galvanised cat ladders carry an 85–100 µm coating to ISO 1461, which typically provides decades of service life depending on exposure class (see ISO 14713 guidance). Coating thickness is verified on every order with a magnetic gauge.
What is the difference between galvanised and hot-dip galvanised cat ladders?
Hot-dip galvanising (HDG) immerses the fully fabricated ladder in a molten zinc bath, leaving a uniform 85–100 µm coating inside and out per ISO 1461. A plain galvanised finish is often electro-galvanized with a much thinner coating that cannot match HDG in outdoor and industrial service. We ship HDG only.
Can I get a galvanised cat ladder with a safety cage?
Yes — cage hoops, vertical bars and all fixings are hot-dip galvanised to match the ladder, with SS304 bolts supplied as standard. Caged runs follow OSHA 1910.28 and EN ISO 14122-4 cage dimensions.
Do you provide compliance documents with galvanised cat ladders?
Every order ships with a Declaration of Conformity, an MTC 3.1 material certificate, structural calculation sheets and an ISO 1461 coating thickness report — all at no extra cost.
What is the minimum order quantity?
Trial orders start from 1 unit — many customers prove a single caged run on site before rolling out a full roof-access program. Container mixes of ladders, cages, gates and brackets are quoted per load plan, so partial quantities combine into one shipment.
Do galvanised cat ladders come with installation support?
Anchor plans and installation drawings are included with every order. Sections bolt together on site, and every ladder is trial-assembled at the factory where specified, so the crew mounts hardware already checked against the drawing. Bracket fixing centres stay at 1500 mm or less per the structural calculation.
Is hot-dip galvanising enough for coastal sites?
An 85–100 µm coating to ISO 1461 delivers decades of service in most atmospheres, with life expectancy set by exposure class under ISO 14713 guidance. For aggressive coastal or chemical air we add an optional powder topcoat over the zinc, or quote SS316 stainless instead.
What happens if the zinc coating is scratched or cut on site?
Because the ladder is dipped after fabrication, welds, threads and cut edges carry the same 85–100 µm zinc as the rest of the surface. Zinc protects sacrificially — the coating corrodes first and shields exposed steel — and touch-up zinc handles deep scars at cuts and welds.
