Definition & Meaning

What Is A Cat Ladder

A cat ladder is a fixed vertical steel access ladder mounted permanently to a wall, roof or structure. The name describes the climbing method — two stiles with evenly spaced rungs at 225–230 mm centres, like the rungs a cat climbs. We fabricate them from Q235B hot-dip galvanized steel (HDG 85–100 µm, ISO 1461), stainless SS304/SS316 (grade-verified), aluminium or GRP/FRP, rated to 1.5 kN per rung. An access route that fails inspection means stop-work orders and retrofit scaffolding at site rates.

  • Fixed, not portable

Bolted to the structure with wall brackets at ≤1500 mm centres — a permanent access route

  • Nothing to do with pets

In trade documents across the UK, Europe, Australia and North America, "cat ladder" means a fixed access ladder

  • Made in Shijiazhuang since 2004

Trial-assembled, hot-dip galvanized and checked before it leaves the factory floor

What is a cat ladder?
A cat ladder is a fixed vertical steel access ladder mounted permanently to a wall, roof or structure. The name describes the climbing method: two stiles with evenly spaced rungs at 225–230 mm centres. We fabricate them from Q235B hot-dip galvanized steel (HDG 85–100 µm, ISO 1461), stainless SS304/SS316, aluminium or GRP/FRP, rated to 1.5 kN per rung.
Why is it called a cat ladder?
The name comes from the climbing method: a fixed vertical run of evenly spaced rungs resembles how a cat climbs a wall. It has nothing to do with pets. In engineering and trade documents, cat ladder means a fixed access ladder, used across the UK, Europe, Australia and North America.
What is a cat ladder used for?
Cat ladders provide permanent maintenance and inspection access to roofs, water tanks, silos, plant rooms, substations, warehouses, conveyor gantries and industrial machinery — anywhere people need repeated vertical access and a stair would take too much floor space.

Cat Ladder vs Caged Ladder vs Catwalk vs Stairs

Choosing the Right Access System

Cat ladders, caged ladders, catwalks and stairs each suit a different climb profile. Match the option to your height, angle and how often people use the route.

Access OptionTypical UseClimb AngleFootprintWhen to Choose

StairsFrequent or heavy-traffic access30–45°LargeDaily use, carrying tools or loads, high traffic
Cat ladder rung and stile detail - cat ladder vs caged ladder comparison
What is the difference between a cat ladder and a caged ladder?
A plain cat ladder has open rungs with no enclosure; a caged ladder adds a safety cage of hoops and vertical straps around the climbing space, starting around 2.2 m above the floor. Our cages use 40×5 mm hoops at 1500 mm centres with 30×3 mm straps, built to EN ISO 14122-4 and BS 4211.
When should I choose a catwalk or stairs instead of a cat ladder?
Use a cat ladder for vertical, space-constrained routes, typically above a 75 degree climb angle. Use a catwalk for horizontal or low-pitch travel, and stairs when users carry heavy loads or climb frequently. Many installations combine a cat ladder to a deck with a short walkway and safety gate.

Cat Ladder Types & Configurations

Types of Cat Ladders and Materials

From a plain vertical run to a full walkway-and-gate access system, every configuration is built on the same 1.5 kN rung geometry with grade-matched steel.

What types of cat ladders do you manufacture?
We manufacture vertical cat ladders, cat ladders with safety cage, with intermediate landing platforms, walkway-and-gate access systems, and sections for multi-storey runs. A single section can reach 25 m, with taller climbs split by rest platforms.
Which material should I choose?
Match material to atmosphere. Q235B hot-dip galvanized steel (HDG 85–100 µm) covers most outdoor sites for decades; SS304 and SS316 stainless suit chemical, coastal and food environments; aluminium suits lightweight routes; GRP/FRP suits corrosive and electrically sensitive areas. All use the same rung geometry and load rating.

What are the standard cat ladder dimensions?
Standard geometry is rungs of 20 mm diameter at 225–230 mm spacing, clear width 500 mm between stiles, and fixing brackets at 1500 mm centres or less. A caged configuration adds a 700 mm diameter cage with 40×5 mm hoops and 30×3 mm straps. BS 4211 and AS 1657 geometry is available on request.
What load rating does a cat ladder carry?
Rungs are rated to 1.5 kN (about 337 lb) per rung, designed for one climber plus tools. Complete ladders are engineered to OSHA 1910.28 and 1910.23, EN ISO 14122-4, BS 4211 and AS 1657, and ship with an engineer-signed structural calculation sheet.
How much does a cat ladder cost?
Pricing depends on climb height, material and cage configuration, so we quote itemized ex-works rates within 24 hours rather than publish averages. Factory-direct rates typically land well below US catalog equivalents for the same compliance documentation. See our cat ladder price guide for what drives cost per metre.

Cat Ladder Safety & Compliance

OSHA, Fall Protection and Compliance Docs

US buyers specify to OSHA 1910.28 / 1910.23; European and Australian projects follow EN ISO 14122-4, BS 4211 and AS 1657. For new fixed ladders over 24 ft, OSHA now requires a personal fall arrest system or ladder safety system rather than a cage — and existing cages above 24 ft must be retrofitted by November 18, 2036.

Caged cat ladder installed on a storage tank - safety and compliance
Do cat ladders comply with OSHA?
Yes. We build to OSHA 1910.28 and 1910.23 for fixed ladders. New fixed ladders over 24 ft must use a personal fall arrest system or ladder safety system; existing ladders with cages have until November 18, 2036 to be retrofitted. We supply both new ladders and retrofit fall-protection components.
When does a cat ladder need a safety cage?
Cages are conventional for vertical fixed ladders where climb height creates fall risk, and are required by EN ISO 14122-4, BS 4211 and AS 1657 beyond defined thresholds. In the US, OSHA 1910.28 sets a 24 ft rule — above 24 ft use a personal fall arrest or ladder safety system. Confirm the applicable standard with your engineer.
What compliance documents ship with each order?
Every order ships free with a Declaration of Conformity (DoC) to the relevant standard, an EN 10204 MTC 3.1 material certificate for Q235B, SS304 or SS316, and an engineer-signed structural calculation sheet. Records are kept on file.

How are cat ladders installed?
Cat ladders install bolt-on with hand tools only — wall brackets fix to the structure at 1500 mm centres or less and ladder sections bolt together. Most installations need no on-site welding. Landing platforms are required for tall runs, and the supplied drawing and calculation sheet cover anchor points and clearances.
How long does production and shipping take?
Standard production is 15–25 working days after drawing approval. We ship EXW, FOB or CIF as container loads or part loads, quoting freight as a line item. For urgent orders, WhatsApp us at +86 15511879488 to confirm the next feasible production slot.
Can I order custom heights and configurations?
Yes. Custom heights price per metre like standard geometry, and we fabricate bespoke configurations — extra platforms, walkways, gates, standoff brackets and private-label finishes. Custom engineering is quoted as a separate line item. Send your drawing for a free review and itemized quote in 24 hours.
