Definition & Meaning
What Is A Cat Ladder
A cat ladder is a fixed vertical steel access ladder mounted permanently to a wall, roof or structure. The name describes the climbing method — two stiles with evenly spaced rungs at 225–230 mm centres, like the rungs a cat climbs. We fabricate them from Q235B hot-dip galvanized steel (HDG 85–100 µm, ISO 1461), stainless SS304/SS316 (grade-verified), aluminium or GRP/FRP, rated to 1.5 kN per rung. An access route that fails inspection means stop-work orders and retrofit scaffolding at site rates.
- Fixed, not portable
Bolted to the structure with wall brackets at ≤1500 mm centres — a permanent access route
- Nothing to do with pets
In trade documents across the UK, Europe, Australia and North America, "cat ladder" means a fixed access ladder
- Made in Shijiazhuang since 2004
Trial-assembled, hot-dip galvanized and checked before it leaves the factory floor
Cat Ladder vs Caged Ladder vs Catwalk vs Stairs
Choosing the Right Access System
Cat ladders, caged ladders, catwalks and stairs each suit a different climb profile. Match the option to your height, angle and how often people use the route.
| Access Option | Typical Use | Climb Angle | Footprint | When to Choose |
|---|---|---|---|---|
| Cat Ladder | Vertical maintenance access | 75–90° | Minimal | Tall, narrow routes; roof hatches; tank sides |
| Caged Ladder | Tall climbs needing fall containment | 75–90° | Minimal + cage | Climbs above 3 m with fall risk (EN ISO / BS / AS) |
| Catwalk / Walkway | Horizontal travel between points | 0–20° | Linear | Connecting ladders, platforms, pipe racks, plant decks |
| Stairs | Frequent or heavy-traffic access | 30–45° | Large | Daily use, carrying tools or loads, high traffic |
Cat Ladder Types & Configurations
Types of Cat Ladders and Materials
From a plain vertical run to a full walkway-and-gate access system, every configuration is built on the same 1.5 kN rung geometry with grade-matched steel.
Cat Ladder with Cage
Open ladder enclosed by hoops and straps for tall climbs — cage starts at 2.2 m
With Landing Platform
Intermediate rest platforms split runs above 25 m and give a safe exit point
With Walkway & Gate
Ladder-to-deck access with self-closing safety gate and guardrail walkway
Vertical Cat Ladder
Plain open-rung run for straightforward vertical access — lowest cost per metre
Access System
Engineered combination of ladders, platforms, walkways and gates for a complete route
Sections & Extension
Multi-storey runs built from bolt-together sections — single section up to 25 m

Cat Ladder Safety & Compliance
OSHA, Fall Protection and Compliance Docs
US buyers specify to OSHA 1910.28 / 1910.23; European and Australian projects follow EN ISO 14122-4, BS 4211 and AS 1657. For new fixed ladders over 24 ft, OSHA now requires a personal fall arrest system or ladder safety system rather than a cage — and existing cages above 24 ft must be retrofitted by November 18, 2036.
- Compliant new ladders
Built and certified to the standard you specify — OSHA, EN ISO, BS or AS
- Retrofit components for 2036

Installation, Production & Ordering
Bolt-On Installation and 24h Quotes
Cat ladders install bolt-on with hand tools only — no on-site welding for most projects. Production runs 15–25 working days, quotes land in 24 hours, and every quote includes a free drawing review.
- Hand-tool assembly
Wall brackets at ≤1500 mm centres, bolt-together sections — most installs need no welding
- Drawing approved first
Layout drawing and calcs cover anchor points and clearances before production starts
- EXW / FOB / CIF shipping
Container or part loads, freight quoted as a line item so you know the landed cost
What Buyers Get Wrong
Five Cat Ladder Myths, Corrected
These five come up in nearly every RFQ — corrected with the numbers we quote against.
| Myth | Reality | The Number That Settles It |
|---|---|---|
| "Cat ladders are for pets" | Cat ladder means a fixed access ladder in trade docs — nothing to do with pets | Rungs at 225–230 mm, load 1.5 kN per rung |
| "Imported means undocumented" | The DoC, MTC 3.1 and calcs travel in the crate regardless of factory location | 5-stage QC chain, records kept on file |
| "Custom costs double" | Custom heights price per metre like standard geometry — custom engineering is quoted as a separate line item | Same HDG per-metre rate whether 5.2 m or 6.0 m |
| "One ladder, huge freight bill" | Sea freight is a quoted line, often less than dealers' embedded margin | EXW / FOB / CIF, container or part load |
| "Stainless everywhere is safer" | Material follows atmosphere — HDG covers most sites for decades | Typical HDG service life varies by atmosphere — see ISO 14713 guidance |
Beyond the Sixteen Answers
Questions by Project Stage — and Where Each One Gets Answered
The sixteen answers above cover the essentials, but real projects generate questions in waves. This index maps each stage of a cat ladder project to the questions that dominate it and the page that answers them in depth.
| Project Stage | The Questions That Come Up | Answered In Depth At |
|---|---|---|
| Specifying | Which standard applies, what geometry and load rating are required | Standards compliance hub |
| Choosing | Which type, configuration and material fit the structure | All cat ladders |
| Ordering | What a sample costs, how payment works, how custom orders run | Custom order process and payment terms |
| Receiving | How the ladder ships, who installs it, what documents arrive | Shipping and logistics and installation service |
